⇒ICHTYORNIS, ICHTHYORNIS, subst. masc.
Oiseau fossile du Crétacé de l'Amérique septentrionale, à caractère reptilien. Sur l'une des deux formes [d'oiseaux], l'ichthyornis, il a été démontré récemment que contrairement aux assertions de Marsh, les dents faisaient défaut (Hist. gén. sc., t. 3, vol. 1, 1961, p. 521). Les Oiseaux crétacés sont très rares (...) les membres sont ceux des Oiseaux actuels et la musculature du vol s'est bien développée, comme l'indique le développement du bréchet d'Ichthyornis (Encyclop. Sc. Techn., t. 8 1972, p. 500). Ichthyornis du Crétacé supérieur du Kansas, sans la mandibule qui est celle d'un Reptile (...), était un Oiseau bon voilier (Zool., t. 4, 1974, p. 300 [Encyclop. de la Pléiade]).

Lang. fr., Lexis 1975), conformément à l'orth. de l'élém. ichtyo- ds Ac. 1935, v. ichtyologie, etc. Étymol. et Hist. 1890 (Lar. 19e Suppl.). Empr. au lat. sc. mod. ichthyornis (1872, MARSH ds NED), formé du gr. « poisson » et « oiseau ».
